While in Puntarenas the other day we made a stop at the local fish market. We were pleasantly surprised by the variety of fish available and the prices.
Bill and I haven't really paid attention to the season or time of year when we've made previous visits to the fish market. In the future we'll remember December seems to have the most variety. We watched boats coming in loaded with mackeral, mahi mahi, snapper, corvina, lobster, shrimp and other varieties they described but I've forgotten.
We paid 7,000 colones for a kilo (2.2lbs) of shrimp and just under 3,000 colones per kilo for mahi-mahi. Unfortunately we didn't find the red snapper in any of the shops or we would've bought some of that as well.
Before my parents returned to their cruise ship we had lunch at a nearby seafood restaurant. It was the first time we've had a waiter bring the fresh fish plates to our table instead of a menu.

The fresh lobsters were 7,000 or 9,000 colones depending on size. I believe both the red snapper and corvina were 7,000 colones and the shimp, six jumbos cost 6,000 colones. I tried the snapper and was not disappointed although I was a little surprise when it was served whole. The bigger surprise was that Callista LOVED my fish.

Looks like we will be purchasing some whole red snapper in the future to prepare at home. We cooked some of the mahi-mahi and shrimp last night for dinner. DELISIOUS and so much less expensive to eat in the comfort of our own home.
