These locally made chocolates were among the sweet treats we discovered on our recent trip to Santa Elena. A local woman suggested we stop at Whole Foods and check out some of the products made by the people in town. We're glad we stopped!
The market has all the usual things you'd expect at a little market like beverages, fruits and sundries. In addition to the regular items you can find locally made things like bath salts, soaps, cookies in a jar and fresh mango juice.
We bought some of the chocolate pictured above, both with and without almonds. YUM! I also got a bag of the almong roca. DELICIOUS! Almost worth the drive by itself. It was that good. Or maybe it's been that long since I've had it. If you know someone who is going up to Monteverde have them bring you back some and judge for yourself. My mouth is watering just writing about it.
In addition to the chocolate we also picked up a few packagess of bagels. Well, at least they looked like bagels . Calli says the package actually says "bagos". They taste more like rolls with a hole in the middle. We're bread lovers so they may not satisfy our bagel cravings but they'll get eaten just the same.
I'm not sure how long the market has been there but we don't remember seeing it on past visits. It's tucked away, off the road a bit right next to a gallery of local artists work.
