This may look like an ordinary tortilla press to you but for us it's life changing.
Life changing, yes! You see, my daughter and I are have always been flour tortilla girls. We haven't ever been fans of the corn variety for anything other the tacos, chips or tostadas.
After having my doctor tell me yet again to lay off the flour it starting sinking in. I must say though it was watching the Jennifer Hudson interview last week on Dateline that gave me what I needed to finally give up on a favorite food. Hearing her say she still eats her chicken quesadillas was key for me.
Neither Callista nor I have been fans of packaged corn tortillas. Memories of ones I made in the past left us all a little skeptical. So after a discussion with a friend we decided to do what she advised and buy masa (dough) from a lady in town. Our first batch wasn't right. We figured it was because they weren't the right thickness.
Cal and I made a special trip into town this morning to get this tortilla press. The tortillas were the right thickness but something still isn't right. So...I'll be playing with my new toy and different types of masa until I come up with a recipe to replace our old favorite flour tortillas.
