Two major attractions in the Cartago area are Volcán Irazú and Lankester Botanical Gardens. Everyone who has ever been to the botanical gardens has told us we needed to go. We finally did.
Personally, I think a return trip is called for but Bill says it was a one time place for him. He prefers other botanical gardens we've seen closer to home. Could be we'd already had a full day and he was thinking of the long drive home after dark.
The weather had been beautiful, BEAUTIFUL all day. As we pulled into the parking lot at Lankester around 3:30pm a light rain started. A little rain didn't stop us from enjoying the gardens. Sadly it wasn't the time of year when a lot of orchid were in bloom. Callista didn't hide her pleasure in that as she knew we would have spent hours in the orchid collection had they been. As it was late in the afternoon we did a quick tour of the orchid collection, Japonese garden, Bromeliads and secondary forest.
Here's a look at what we saw in the orchid collection.
It seems the Japonese Gadens were where we spent most of our time. There weren't a lot of flowers to see but we enjoyed walking the different paths, crossing the bridges, listening to and admiring the stands of bamboo.
