It was spectacular just as exected, the first blooming of the year. And as predicted it was preceded by buckets of rain. In the slide show below you'll see photos taken around 7:30pm before I turned in for the night as well as those taken around 2:30am during peak bloom and some taken at 5am this morning as they started to close.
As you can imagine I'm a bit tired today but as you can see by the photos it was worth it. I don't get up in the middle of the night for other bloomings, just the first. It looks like tonight we'll have several more open. Judging by the number of buds on the cactus at the moment it looks like an awesome year for our night blooming cactus.
Reader Paul sent me information about blooming parties in Victorian times. I guess it was the thing to do. Honestly, I'm too tired to read info at the moment but may write more later after I've rested. I will say it sounds like a fun idea I doubt we'll be having one. It's one thing to get up at 2am to see the blooms and another to deal with people at that hour. Besides most people we know other than locals prefer to be snug in their own homes after dark. Now that the rainy season is upon is it's a wise decision.
