We have awesome friends! A family we met a few years ago through the blog were generous enough to invite us to share in their annual Costa Rican adventure. This year they decided to spend the entire trip at the ocean, Playa Pelada in Nosara to be more specific. Better weather than what they left in Colorado.
Our friends arrived in the country early last Monday morning, stopped at our house for breakfast then continued on their way to the Nicoya Peninsula. It's a five hour trip from our house to Nosara depending on traffic and road conditions. All but the last 25km are paved. In our opinion the road wasn't bad but take into consideration we've lived here awhile and may be desensitized to crappy roads.
This being our first experience with the province of Guanacaste seemed to make the the ride go by quickly. It was all new once we passed the Puntarenas turn-off. We'd always stayed away because we'd heard how touristy Guanacaste was and because of the heat.
We actually did pretty good with the heat on the drive, didn't even use the a/c until the last 10km when the traffic picked up and we were eating dust. It's dry all over the country right now as we near the end of the dry season but it was incredibly dry, desert like dry in Guanacaste.
To get to the Nicoya Peninsula by car you've got two choices either take the ferry or drive across the Puente La Amistad de Taiwan, the Friendship bridged gifted to Costa Rica from Taiwan.

The bridge was cool and educational for Callista but we still want to experience the ferry. Once across the bridge the road takes you right through the town of Nicoya. A busy place, at least on a Friday afternoon. Not as much traffic on our return trip Sunday but still more vehicles than we'd seen all weekend in Nosara.
The road from Nicoya to Nosara is dotted with rental cabinas, the usual fruit stands and sodas as well as those selling hand-crafted pottery, wood carvings and furniture. We may have to go back and check out the furniture.
We had an excellent experience made even better by having visitors to "our" country help us experience something new. A huge THANK-YOU goes out to our Colorado friends. Another heart-felt thank-you goes out to other great friends who were kind enough to care for our dogs while we were gone.
Gracias "W" family and S&L! We feel honored to count you among our friends.
