It's no secret, the beef in Costa Rica leaves something to be desired. Coming from Arizona, we're cow people, we like our beef. The pork here is outstanding, we've switched from beef to the other white meat. Since moving, we've tried beef from different carnicerias and are happy with the roasts we buy from our regular butcher but steaks, that's another story.
We've learned to live without many things here. Good beef is just one of them, until recently. After our friends had us over for a delicious steak dinner and we were determined to find Don Fernando's in Escazu and get some cow for ourselves. We found it on our second attempt.
Don Fernando's is a dreamland for beef lovers in Costa Rica. Bill and I were dazed and speechless for several minutes before we could even begin to think about what we wanted to buy. Not only can you buy t-bones, prime rib, baby beef, flank steaks and an assortment of other beef similiar to what you'd expect in the states but if you can't wait to get your meat home they'll cook it up for you right there! You can even get a baked potato and veggies to go with it and dine on the outdoor patio.
We bought two flank steaks, three del monico steaks and three baby beef t-bones for $20. In the future we'll be able to combine a visit with our friends with a trip to Don Fernando's and have double our pleasure. Next time maybe we'll even stop at the Chocolateria near by.
We had one of the flank steaks for dinner tonight, mmmm delicious. I'm looking forward to having t-bones for Christmas. Who needs turkey?
